Sam was born and raised in rural west-central Minnesota on Sybil Lake. He holds a B.S. in Zoology from North Dakota State University, as well as an M.Div. in Biblical Languages, a Th.M. in Pedagogy, and a Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He also completed Midwestern Seminary’s Ph.D. Residency program, receiving interdisciplinary training in Old and New Testament studies, historical theology, and academic institutional administration, and served for four years as the doctoral fellow for Dr. Joe Allen III, Gary Taylor Chair of Missions and Evangelism, and Assistant Professor of Missions at Midwestern Seminary.
Sam’s doctoral dissertation, A Theology of Kingdom Law: A Retrieval of Thomistic Law for Progressive Dispensationalism, develops a systematic theology of law within progressive dispensationalism through a retrieval of Thomas Aquinas’s theology of law. Grounded in realist metaphysics, his research presents a distinctive synthesis of Thomistic and evangelical theology. He is a member of the Evangelical Theological Society and has presented papers at multiple annual meetings. He has coauthored, with Joe Allen, the article “Do Systematic Theologies Neglect Evangelismand Missions?” published in the Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society. His broader research interestsinclude theologies of law, political theology, metaphysical realism, beauty, theological anthropology, gender, theological systems, and the theology and practice of evangelism.
Beyond academia, Sam and his wife Kate have one child named Boaz. Sam has served as an evangelist with Ambassadors for Christ International for eight years. He has ministered across six continents, engaging in evangelism and leadership training. Much of this work was in partnership with Dan Rudman, training international church leaders representing over 20 countries. His work also includes evangelism to secular-atheistic university students here in the U.S., as well as cities such as Montevideo, Paris, and Beijing.
